The 2009/2010 Music Series at Berklee continues with master fiddler and American roots music icon Mark O'Connor, along with Berklee faculty member Matt Glaser, student bluegrass groups, and a full orchestra. Americana and Roots: Mark O'Connor at Berklee takes place on Thursday, Dec. 10, at 8:15 p.m., at the Berklee Performance Center, 136 Massachusetts Ave., Boston. Alexander Acha Wins Latin Grammy Award
Berklee alumnus Alexander Acha '03, whose debut album, Voy, reached gold status, was named Best New Artist at the 10th Annual Latin Grammy Awards, held at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. Acha can be seen in a special television presentation of Berklee Canta en Espanol, a concert that Berklee produced in Mexico City with some of Berklee's top Latin American pop artists. Telehit, Televisa's music channel, will broadcast the concert on November 22 and 29 to 60 countries. RCN satellite subscribers in the U.S. can tune in on channel 555. Other performers include Tommy Torres, Benny Ibarra, Manne de la Parra, and the rock band Motel.

Music technologist Andrew Beck profiled
Andrew Beck had played around with computer programming before he came to Berklee, but it wasn't until his junior year that his musical and technical interests melded. Described as a "virtuosic programmer" by professor Richard Boulanger, the music synthesis/film scoring dual major has now written textbook chapters, gotten a full scholarship to Georgia Tech's master's program, filed two patents, and founded a startup company—just two years after graduation. We spoke to Beck about his accomplishments by phone; below is a condensed and edited version of our conversation.

Four Gospel Ensembles, One Night
Berklee's 50-plus-member Reverence Gospel Ensemble, and small gospel groups Women of Virtue, Overjoyed, and Men of Valor, present the concert Bringing Nations Together With Gospel, directed by associate professor Dennis Montgomery III. The concert will include gospel standards and Montgomery originals. It takes place on Monday, December 7, at 8:15 p.m. at the Berklee Performance Center (BPC), 136 Massachusetts Avenue, Boston. Berklee String Orchestra: Sing for Love – Shout at War
On November 24th at 7PM The Berklee Jazz/World String Orchestra under the direction of Eugene Friesen will present a special concert, “Sing for Love - Shout at War” at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul, 138 Tremont Street in Boston. The program will include music by Pat Metheny, Shostakovich and Berklee composer Mimi Rabson. The concert will feature Mexican vocalist Mili Bermejo in three love songs from Mexico and Argentina. Soloists from the ensemble will also be featured improvising in a variety of jazz and folk styles. Berklee voice professor Mili Bermejo blends Latin folk music and jazz improvisation with poetic and socially aware lyrics. Critics have described her sound as “part poetry-folk, part Sarah Vaughn sophistication” (Boston Magazine). Included on Ms. Bermejo’s selections will be Tim Ray, longtime pianist with Lyle Lovett, and Dan Greenspan on bass.

Rob Wheeler attends Keith Lockhart clinic
Music educator, composer, and arranger Rob Wheeler came back to campus to attend a clinic by Keith Lockhart. Lockhart spoke to students, alumni, faculty, and staff for over an hour, describing his early career and giving advice to students on how to build a career for themselves.

Brent Havens Rocks Naples Symphony
Composer and arranger Brent Havens of Virginia Beach is reinvigorating the Naples, Florida symphony with orchestral adaptations of the music of Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Elvis, and ABBA. Havens started 'The Music of Led Zeppelin' almost fifteen years ago with the Virginia symphony, and audiences have responded enthusiastically.

Video Game Orchestra
Berklee's first-of-its-kind Video Game Orchestra is performing at the Berklee Performance Center. This is its first show at Berklee since its sold-out performance in March. With a 45-piece orchestra, a choir, and a 5-piece rock band, they will perform new arrangements of classic titles such as Super Mario Bros. and Final Fantasy, and music from modern hits like God of War, Silent Hill, and Metal Gear Solid." Renowned video game music composer Wataru Hokoyama (Afrika, Resident Evil 5) will guest conduct the VGO for his own Afrika Suite, which won numerous awards last year.

Richard Niles sat down with Guitar International to talk about his new book, 'The Pat Metheny Interviews.' The book transcribes interviews and delves into Metheny's creative process. They also preview upcoming books 'What is Melody', 'What is Improvisation', and 'The Invisible Artist,' which explores the major contributions made by collaborators working with the Beatles, Miles Davis, and others.

More than 200 people turned out for Berklee's third showcase at the 29th annual CMJ Music Marathon—New York's largest music event—despite on and off downpours throughout the day.
