Vaindirlis, ChristineMama Africa Dances across Continents: Funky Global Citizen Christine Vaindirlis Channels the Spirit of Home

Born in London, raised in Johannesburg, trained in Milan under La Scala supervision and in Boston at Berklee, singer, composer and arranger Christine Vaindirlis is more than a mere globetrotter; she is the world. Yet wherever her free-spirited journey has taken her, she’s always yearned for home: Africa!

Vaindirlis lets her global chops and love for her South African homeland shine on her vivacious debut, Dance Mama! (Ubuntu World Music; November 3, 2009), a shout out to South African jazz greats, as well as to an eclectic mix of R&B and funk icons from Chaka Khan to Tower of Power, all filtered through Vaindirlis’s unique worldly perspective as a classically trained opera singer, former English teacher, audio gear specialist, and corporate executive.

“My inspiration for the album was the concept of ubuntu: helpfulness, caring, trust, unselfishness, what one can do to improve the community, as well as oneself as an individual,” Vaindirlis explains. “‘This is my Place’ is a song of encouragement for the people of South Africa to work as one nation. There is so much ethnic diversity, and the whole blend is such an extraordinary fusion when everyone brings something to the table. I’m calling for us to embrace a new day, to work together for a wave of change and make South Africa, our home, an example”.

Vaindirlis’s faith, along with her deep love of her homeland and its art, shapes her life and music. Title track “Dance Mama!” is a high-energy tribute to the late, great Miriam Makeba and “Pata-Pata,” her hit song. “‘Pata-Pata’ always makes me want to dance,” Vaindirlis smiles. “If I wake up some time in the middle of the night and feel like crying, I know that someone up there is always watching over me and that I'm never alone. Faith is something very personal that one can only experience for themselves. Because of this joy I can dance, and do the pata-pata! It reminds me of home and brings back good memories.”

She tucked little tributes into her complex arrangements: a flugelhorn solo honoring Hugh Masekela, a piano nod to Abdullah Ibrahim, background vocals reminiscent of the Mahotella Queens, horns alluding to Robbie Jansen and the African Jazz Pioneers. She created the design for the album artwork after long days of arranging, inspired by images and colors from Zulu beadwork and colorful geometric paintings on Ndebele houses.

“South African people are very creative, and nature is so beautiful back home. Colors are intense and vibrant: The blues are a deep blue, the greens are a particular shade, the sun shines most of the time and dramatic storms last less than an hour before clear skies reappear,” Vaindirlis laughs. “That’s the way South African music is as well—vibrant and powerful.”

She longed to produce an album that captured this joy, energy, and power and knew that the right South African musicians, along with innovators like up-and-coming jazz pianist Hiromi and fiery Screaming Headless Torsos percussionist Daniel Sadownick, would bring her vision together. She tapped artists like accordion player Tony Cedras and bassist Bakithi Kumalo, both of whom gained worldwide acclaim for their work with Paul Simon on Graceland.

Vaindirlis grew up listening to South African jazz on the radio and enjoying the traditional singing and dancing on the street at any given day in downtown Johannesburg. Yet one major touchstone for Vaindirlis was and remains her first favorite album as a child, Ipi Ntombi, a hit musical rich in traditional African singing, dancing, and powerful drumming. It tells the tale of a young Zulu tribesman who leaves his rural village for Egoli (Johannesburg), the city of gold, in search of better prospects. There he is confronted with the realities of urban life and in his growing disillusionment, wonders, “Is this my place?”

Vaindirlis shared a similar fate, venturing into new worlds and far from home, and the music and the questions of Ipi Ntombi accompanied her throughout her travels. “At each stop—Italy, Cyprus, Boston, and now New York—I’ve asked myself, ‘Is this my place?’” Yet palpable joy and ubuntu of Dance Mama! has taken Vaindrilis far beyond questions of belonging and geography. “People can never figure out where I'm from because they can’t identify my ‘look”’ with a particular race. That’s fantastic because I don’t like being put in a box,” Vaindirlis muses. “If the spirit of ubuntu is there, that’s all that matters.”

Though the headstrong Vaindirlis longed to go to the Berklee College of Music, her parents were nervous about their young daughter setting off alone for the U.S. “You know, they were worried about all the things they’d hear on the news, about all the violence, which was really not all that different from Johannesburg,” Vaindrilis recalls. So after a brief stop on Cyprus to finish off the last years of high school, she hatched a plan: Vaindirlis headed to Milan, ostensibly to study Italian, while the real goal was to audition for the highly respected Conservatorio di Milano Giuseppe Verdi. “It was the next best alternative, and people in Europe always start off with classical training,” Vaindrilis explains. She walked away from the audition with a full scholarship.

After a few years at the conservatory and later working with teachers from opera house La Scala, while singing in church and writing for her rock band, Vaindirlis realized opera just wasn’t her thing. “I can’t act to save my life!” she exclaims. “In the middle of the most solemn moment, most likely where someone had just died, I would burst out in an uncontrollable laughing fit and then the audience would eventually start laughing and I would steal the show…or ruin it. The truth was, I also wanted to express my story.”

And like most musicians, she needed to pay rent. Vaindrilis stepped into the corporate world, but her dream of Berklee and a career in music still beckoned. Before she knew it, Vaindirlis was at the European auditions for the music college. Again, she won a scholarship.

Both her conservatory experience in Milan and her time at Berklee honed her skills as a singer, composer, and arranger, and Vaindirlis still feels she keeps an orchestral approach to songwriting, a love of complex interlocking parts and lush large ensembles rich with horns. “If you close your eyes and listen, little details pop out here and there that make you travel,” she adds. “It’s like listening to nature: there’s so much going but it all makes sense.”

Her skills let her combine her two great loves—South African jazz and down-and-dirty funk—on songs like “Call to Freedom”, and to craft a fitting tribute to her late father, whose love of fishing, the ocean, and hunting inspired ‘Down By the River.’ “Whenever I used to call him with a problem, he would tell me not to worry and that we would come up with some kind of plan,” Vaindirlis reminisces. “When I was little, we would fight all the time. He was very strict and I was stubborn but at the end of the day he was the best father I could ever have."

Vaindirlis’s deeply personal experience and transcontinental life has culminated in her songs and remains a source of profound happiness and gratitude, the sunny disposition that echoes throughout her work. “It's like a house that you build, brick by brick and you never know how long it’s going to take or what it will be like. You cry and scream with frustration in between, but then when you stop, look back, and see the big picture, you think ‘wow!’ It’s fascinating how I got here,” Vaindirlis smiles. “And when you least expect it, it’s time to fly.”

Farall, JorgeMostly devoted to composition and arranging (original scores for theater, composing and arranging for small combos to symphonic orchestras, commercials). I graduated in Jazz Composition not because I intended to write "pure jazz", but to use it as a tool in trying to introduce those elements in order to develop a rich fusion between this and my Country's own music (folkloric & tango). My most recent composition, Moods a Piano Suite, features some of this "experiments" which so far I can consider succesful but still developing in some new pieces I'm working on. Moods has already been performed at the Ramsey Concert Hall, Athens, in a meeting organized by the Center of Latin American and Caribbean Studies of the University of Georgia.

Foldvari, GergelyI graduated from Berklee with a 'magna cum laude' degree in Composition. Honorary Doctorate Pat Metheny handed us the diplomas. My principal teachers were John Bavicchi, Henry Augustine Tate, David Calahan, George Monseur, Peter Cokkinias, Edward Bedner, Ray Santisi, Eric Reasoner, Steve Rochinski and Dennis Montgomery III. I thank Berklee for the great quality of education and for substantial scholarship and financial support. During my years at Berklee I won first prize in the Zambelli Piano Competition and received the Richard Levy Prize for Composition. Residing in residential Brookline prooved to be a great choice after some months in low quality housing near the otherwise state-of-the-art Berklee campus. The extremely cultural towns of Boston and Cambridge had so much to offer intellectually: Harvard, Boston University and the countless more educational and cultural institutions can keep any vibrant and artistically inclined mind well fed. The natural beauty of nearby States such as New Hampshire and Maine should also be part of anyone's stay at Berklee.

Walen, AndrewCurrently, I just moved with my family from Nashville, TN to Baltimore, MD. I accepted a job in April 2007 to be a clinical therapist at the University of Maryland Medical Center Department of Psychiatry. Though music is still a love, it is now a hobby rather than a vocation. It is still my hope to one day open a mental health clinic for musicians, but that will have to wait a few years. Pearlman, AnouschkaHi -well here's where I've been-after some years in boston as a music educator and performer, I recorded the first CD which got radio play in the states and abroad as well as positive press. (you can check out my site at www.anouschka.info) I moved to LA where I played various venues, wrote more songs and worked in post production. Since i wasn't making enough money off gigs (do they ever PAY in LA????) to pay the musicians, I started getting more reliant on performing solo and demoing by myself at my DAW . Given the choice i still prefer playing with live musicians. Right now I am in Europe again. I would love to hear from all the old friends i lost track of along the way so if that's you, drop a line

Germain, AndrewFounder, Director and Creator of Musical Content for "The Life-Skills Music Institute"

The Life-Skills Music Institute:

The Life-Skills Music Institute (LSMI) was founded by Andrew Germain in 2008, (a graduate of the Berklee College of Music). The LSMI’s non-profit mission is to improve the health of young children – by using irresistible musical creations to grow their life-skills and to strengthen the social fabric of their families.

Given the economic & educational stresses of these special times (the Dawn of the 21st Century in America), and the lure of Internet-based virtual networks for kids– coupled with the tendency to outsource family responsibilities of all sorts -- the need for this evidence-based life-skills enhancement support has never been greater.

The LSMI uses novel processes & tools for developing its life-skills enhancement musical offerings.
On one level, the Life-Skills Music Institute is supported by a Board Of Scientific Advisors, world-class scientists & clinicians that help to highlight the latest evidence-based scientific best-practices in the life-skills enhancement area.
On a higher level, the LSMI is also supported by a Board of Master Performing Artists, who add their years of insight and experience to ensuring the musical integrity & irresistibility of the LSMI offerings.
The net result is a body of work for kids of all ages (and their families), that is engaging, energizing, memorable – and overall instructive in nature.

The LSMI tends to target is offerings to large public institutions that have a significant number of children in daycare or after-school educational programs. After a careful and thorough needs-assessment, the LSMI delivers exciting customized life-skills enhancement performances for the children, staff & parents – usually over significant periods of time – thus promoting authentic learning about the life-skills toolset and its real-life applications. The LSMI structures performance-metrics into all of its offerings to measure the actual benefit delivered to all participants.

(Hereafter Cited As “The Foundation”).
May 28, 2008

Organizational Mission:
• The mission of the non-profit Foundation is to provide selected American children, of all social classes, with an irresistible exposure –via the power of really-cool music – to evidence-based, best-practice principles for optimizing personal (life-stage appropriate) life-composition, both for the children & for their relationships to their other family-members.

Organizational Vision:
• To provide medium to large-size U.S. business-organizations ( only those with in-house childcare & child-educational facilities ) with supplemental, customized, music-based, life-skills development programming for their involved children & parents.
o Examples might include:
• large federal & state agencies, such at the U.S. Navy & NIH;
• Large & mid-size corporations, like SAS, medical hospital corporations & Intel; and,
• large universities/medical schools

Organizational Values:
• Andrew Germain will be the full-time paid Director of this highly-specialized childhood/parental-relationship educational Foundation, supported by full-time, paid administrative & entertainment management support.
o The Foundation will receive a low-cost license to utilize selected songs and other artistic creations of Andrew Germain for any approved Foundation uses:
o The ownership of all such intellectual property & material will reside in a private holding company, owned by Andrew Germain.
• The Foundation will have an all-volunteer Advisory-Board, consisting of 50% life-scientists & 50% performing artists – a burning point of continuous collective-learning to:
• First, to evaluate the reproducible evidence determine which life-skills tools/best-practice principles could be most useful for promoting the optimal growth of children & for their relationships to their other family-members; and
• Secondly, to evaluate the optimal music-based learning experiences/presentation formats for involved children, their family members, and their sponsoring organizations;
• Thirdly, to create the best metric tools for measuring Foundation programming success/failure.

Landy, Libbyi turned 40 october 2006 and went in for my 1st mammogram on nov 14th. as many of you know the way they tell if anything's wrong is to compare 'this years' films to the previous years' films. in my case there was no 'last year' so i had to go back in for a 2nd visit. but it was a little more than that. apparantly there was a little blob they couldn't really get a good image of, so we had a biopsy, and it came back DCIS (ductal carcinoma in situ).

this is a stage 0 cancer. it's contained in the milk ducts, and has not yet spread anywhere else. we met with a specialist surgeon last wednesday, the 13th and he gave us news that was better than we could hope for. Next tues, dec 19th i will be in hospital for a lumpectomy on my right breast. he will remove about a pecan-size bit of tissue. it is an outpatient procedure, so i'll be home tues. night. (let's hope the power's back on or matt'll be on fireplace duty!) at this point there will be no chemo, no radiation and no reconstruction needed. i'll be able to resume all activities as soon as i feel up to it, so the SeattleToPortland ride this summer is still a go.
what i have is not a physical 'lump'. you can not see or feel it, so the only detection we had of it was via the mammograms. again, at this time there is no chemo, no radiation, and no reconstruction expected or planned.
so if you are 38+ years of age and have not yet had, or it's been more than a year since your last mammogram, do yourself a favor and schedule one tomorrow. if you are under 38 years of age - especially if you have a family history of cancer - it's not too early to get your first mammogram!
mammograms do save lives, and i'll be living proof!
that was the start of the saga...

Motyka, ScottI miss Berklee! Being so young, I left in just about my 3rd year in order to attempt rock stardom! Ugh!! Yes, young is being generous! I've always regret not having attained my degree and hope to some day return to finish.

In 2009 I've completed a self-produced solo album of instrumental hard-rock, entitled "CUT.. ..FROM WITHIN." With that, I'm supporting the release with select gigs throughout New England, with my power trio, and plan to use every modern online social-networking tool available to push and promote myself independently.

In the end, becoming the best musician I can be, and remaining a student of the instrument, are my goals.
I do hope to finally transition to full-time musician over the next few years and finally realize my dream.

"..back to practice."

PS Hi to Paulo Dana (if you are out there drop me a line!)

After touring Europe and the US for 4 years as Keyboardist for The United States Army Rock Band, Daniel attended Berklee in the mid-80s and graduated Cum Laude with a Degree in Music Production & Engineering and Music Synthesis.

After Berklee, Daniel was a Soundware Engineer for Kurzweil Music Systems, and later became the Director of Soundware Engineering at Sweetwater Sound, where he developed over 20 Soundware CD-ROMs for Kurzweil, Korg, Yamaha, and E-MU.

Daniel was also hired to create Factory Presets for the Kurzweil K2000, K2500, K2600, the Korg Prophecy, Trinity, and Triton keyboards, the Alesis QuadraSynth, QS6, QS7, QS8, and TC Electronics FireworX.

Griffin, PatrickVOICES FROM BEYOND is an album of multi-faceted music by Los Angeles film composer Patrick Griffin, featuring himself and his brothers Paul, Michael, Larry, as well as Ginny and Ileane Griffin. The project was inspired by the tragic loss of the Griffin brothers' sister Julie Jensen (Griffin), a victim of an antifreeze poisoning murder by her husband Mark Jensen.

OurSisterJulie.com is a website created by the brothers that details the ten year unfolding of events since Julie's death in 1998 at the early age of 40. Serving as a tribute to the much loved mother of two boys, hundreds of thousands of viewers have been moved by the human tragedy of the high profile case. Not only was the trial aired in its entirety on CNN's TruTV, it was featured on ABC's 20/20 on February 29, 2008, and will be featured on CBS' 48 HOURS to be aired April 15, 2008. The seven-week trial of Wisconsin vs. Mark Jensen ended this February in the conviction of Mark Jensen, who received a life sentence with no parole.

The Griffins are professional musicians who created music as a family dedication to their sister Julie, whose letter she wrote before her death pointed suspicion toward her husband after she found amongst his items a deadly shopping list. The album is a reflective musical journey in which each title portrays a certain memory of Julie's life: her childhood, her mothering, her personality, to name a few. "Julie was a positive, loving, and warm sincere person that I hope others can get to know through the music. It's very simple and accessible music with a mixture of stylistic elements including folk, classical, jazz and rock, but mostly it's about relaxing and going on a healing musical journey. It would bring a smile to her face seeing her brothers work together on something positive and lasting."

The much-anticipated album is immediately available from OurSisterJulie.com through CD Baby or iTunes, and will be added to more download services by the end of April. There is a free sampling on the website music page, as well as Griffin brother's biographies and a free pdf of album liner notes.

The Griffins wish to share their musical message of love and hope with everyone, and especially desire to encourage victims to escape their domestic abuse. A portion of proceeds beyond production cost will go toward a yet-to-be-determined women's abuse shelter.

Pashulak, IngridSUNPALACEMUSIC.COM GETS 'FRESH WEB'

NEW YORK, May 14, 2002 -- New York-based alternative band SUN PALACE just got the iHAV NEW MEDIA 'Fresh Web' treatment. SunPalaceMusic.com recently relaunched as they promote their successful CD debut, INTO HEAVEN.
"The album is about death, life, and the reflection of beauty that can come from both," says Sun Palace frontwoman, Andriette Redmann. "We knew iHAV NEW MEDIA could give our site a mystical presence."
Band guitarist, John Rokosny, adds "It's a pleasure to work with a designer who, as a musician and producer herself, understands the emphasis of the music and how to evoke its visual counterpart."
That's because Ingrid Haviland, aka iHAV NEW MEDIA, is on a mission to create 'Fresh Web'. "The web is about 10 years old, yet so much of it looks wilted already. In most sites, content equals information; there's a lack of context, a lack of emotion. I want to tell a story."

And where does that story come from? Haviland never has to look far. "My favorite question to ask a client is: 'What do you stand for?' Everything flows from there."
Got Fresh Web? See
http://www.SunPalaceMusic.com
http://www.TAMARarts.com

for more.
(Haviland's vitae loca includes producer and writer, musician and artist, web developer and graphic designer. On a regular day, she may be doing any or all of these. Her work has been voicing the heart of her clients' vision since 1997.)

Phaneuf, Rhob(Rhob Elliott) After touring from 1987-2000, opened a recording studio in central North Carolina focusing on putting out great cuts for artists that cannot afford or do not want to record in large studios. I also have songs recorded on a number of albums - 4 more coming out this year from various artists. It is a lifelong endeavor -and I'm only halfway there!

After leaving Berklee in 1986 I focused on the writing and moved to piano from trumpet to advance that. After working for a time with fellow Berklee Alums in a wild project called Planet IF / Sadhana I moved to Florida and began touring in earnest with various acts - now on Bass, which has been my instrument for the past 12 years. Along with continuing to perform, I am currently working on a full length CD project with Rockers Blind Crisis as songwriter, arranger, producer and lead engineer; Country mail vocalist Mike Rimmer from Charlotte, NC; Country act Stonewall from Florida; Rockers Izac from NC; and all the little ones you tend to gather in a studio that actually pay the bills.

On a personal note, I married another artist/writer Traci Lazenby, and together we operate a granola-free personal resistance movement against becoming June and Ward Cleaver with our two wild boys, aged 5 and 6 who's names are NOT Wally and the Beaver.

Brouillette, LukeGraduated 1980 with a Diploma in Professional Music. Currently adjunct guitar instructor at Northwestern State University of Louisiana and doing various types of performing.
Young, David S.Howdy, folks! To quote the Grateful Dead, "What a long strange trip it's been!" I'm married, with two sons (ages 12 & 19), living in the Atlanta area. After Berklee, I played with the band LUCKY SOUTHERN for a couple of years (for memories, check out http://www.dirtywater.com/a2z/l/luckysouthern/index.html), before moving to Atlanta. Then I worked for eight years with the Music Management program at the Art Institute of Atlanta, before finally deciding that my real path in life was to work with kids.

I graduated from Georgia State University in 1992 with a Masters of Education degree in School Counseling, and I've been an Elementary School Counselor ever since! I'm adding a Specialist in Education degree from the Univeristy of Georgia this August 2004, and I've had a few school counseling related journal articles published. Music is still in the picture, but more or less a hobby now. I play drums every Saturday night for my church's Contemporary Service (along with my son, who's a heck of a bass player). We released a CD last year (for more info, check out http://www.cutelittlechurch.com). I also play around Atlanta occasionally with two different bands - The Fried Combo, and Perry Santrell and the Jam Band. I'm working on a CD of original material with the Fried Combo right now, and we hope to release it by the end of the year.

I'd LOVE to hear back from anyone that remembers me from my Berklee days (1977-1980), which were some of the happiest days of my life. Atlanta is great, but I do miss Fenway Park, Regina's, No Name, jogging along the Charles, and that guy who yelled "SLICE!!" at the Back Bay House of Pizza! All in all, life's been good, and I'm quite happy at the ripe old age of 49. Take care, everyone! E-mail me at BYoung1441@aol.com

Liberman, RobertAlthough I have remained active in music, I also went back to school for Bachelors Degree in Computer Science.

I am now living in Silver Spring, Maryland and work as an independent consultant to a government agency. In addition to my tasks as webmaster, I am also a multimedia specialist composing original music and recording voice-overs for multimedia products.

I'm still married since 1978 and have two grown daughters!

Wenslow, MichaelI'm still in LA, but I am no longer active in the music business. I still compose "New Music" (microtonal contemporary classical music) for my own enjoyment and very little money. I am a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer, currently with Countrywide Home Loans.
Holloman, VernonRecently released "The Best of Vern Holloman For Kids" June 1, 2001 and is a compilation of children’s educational music that I originally released on three cassette albums. The CD is available at Cdbaby.com, Amazon.com, PlanetCD.com and Bristolmusic.com (CDNow)and other catalog retailers.
Since graduating from Berklee in 1978 with a bachelor’s degree in music education I joined our family business back in Virginia. Now owner of Holloman Child Development and Education Centers Inc. we currently employ 100 people and serve approximately 900 students each day with four campus locations in Newport News, Williamsburg, York County and Hampton, Virginia. Certainly, music education as well as general academics is high on our list of priorities.
In other areas, I’ve performed locally with the Triad band and other groups for over 20 years doing “gb”general business gigs. In 1982 and ‘83 I produced two local concerts for the late drummer Buddy Rich and trumpeter Maynard Ferguson. Most recently, I’ve been performing children’s music doing concerts in Hartford, CT, Phoenix, AZ, Charlotte, NC, Atlanta, GA, Baton Rouge, LA, Gulf Shores, AL, and Jacksonville, FL.
While I enjoy children’s music I still have the urge to write and perform what I prefer personally, smooth-funky jazz. Every now and then I just have to get into the groove. Later this year I’ll be releasing a new CD featuring original compositions in this genre.
In other unrelated work, I received three gubernatorial appointments to serve for 8 years on Virginia’s Child Day Care Council (the state’s regulatory board) and I served as Chairman of the Governor’s Advisory Commission on Welfare Reform under Governor Allen and Gilmore for five years. I’m also the executive director and registered lobbyist for the Proprietary Child Care Association of Virginia. As such, I’ve written and had introduced about a dozen different bills and resolutions that have become law in Virginia over the past 15 years. “Those Berklee people sure do get around”.
I’m married to Catherine who I met while attending Berklee and together we have two great kids - Douglas, age 15 and Elizibith, age 17.
