Women of Faith by Rebecca M. Alvin (2008, 60 min.)
6:00 PM-8:00 PM

465 Huntington Ave
Boston, MA

July 2 through 10 @ The MFA Boston
Rebecca Alvin ( Berklee '89-90 film scoring)
Mark van Bork (Berklee MP&E '92)
Women of Faith by Rebecca M. Alvin (2008, 60 min.). Throughout history, nuns were allowed certain advantages over other women—such as a formal education--while being oppressed within their vocational pursuits. What would make a woman choose this life today? Through interviews with Poor Clares and Maryknoll Sisters, a former nun, and a Roman Catholic Womanpriest, the film examines their choices to lead profoundly religious lives in the Catholic tradition during this post-feminist era. By allowing her subjects to speak for themselves about their lives, beliefs, and choices, Alvin presents a picture of a different kind of feminism. "Alvin's lens is wide open, and what she catches is sometimes surprising and consistently thought provoking" (Bethany Gibbons, Cape Cod Today).

A discussion with the director follows the July 5 screening.
Members, seniors, students $8; general admission $10

Route 2A
Acton, MA

Boston's preeminent acoustic jazz group - the Tough Love Trio - returns to the Acton Jazz Café!

The Tough Love Trio is comprised of three exceptionally active musicians in the Boston music scene. Their repertoire consists of standard/not-so-standard and contemporary jazz, in the classic lineup of guitar, double bass, and drums. Individually they have recorded and performed internationally with a wide array of diverse artists, and appeared on numerous radio and television programs. Collectively, these assured stylists deliver an elegant, mature, and distinctive brand of jazz that has earned glowing reviews among contemporaries and clients alike. Guitarist Mike Mele and drummer Steve Chaggaris have been members of the Ken Clark Organ Trio for over a decade, and appear on the critically acclaimed CDs 'Eternal Funk' (2003) and 'Mutual Respect' (2005) for the venerable Severn Records label. Mike has also worked with Michelle Willson, Fats Hammond, Rusty Scott, and Myanna. He has studied with Charlie Banacos, Garrison Fewell, and John Damian. Steve has worked with The Soul Band, Colleen Sexton, Michelle Willson, Ran Blake, Ben Schwendener, and Chris Stovall Brown. He has studied with Alan Dawson, Bob Gullotti, and Ian Froman. Bassist Blake Newman is a founding member of the Jeff Robinson Trio, who’ve been a weekly staple at the renowned Lizard Lounge in Cambridge for eleven years. They recorded the CD 'Next On The Mic' (2007) for Rounder Records; their brilliant improvised music accompanying several top performance poets. Blake has also worked with Bruce Katz, David Maxwell, Duke Robillard, Gamelan Galak Tika, and with the distinguished productions of 'Oedipus' and 'OrpheusX' at the American Repertory Theatre. He has studied with Gary Peacock, Charlie Haden and Dave Holland. Blake, Mike and Steve hold Bachelor of Music degrees from Berklee College of Music.

August 5th
Technoir

- I recorded a 3 song EP with Technoir with winter at The Moontower Recording Studio in Cambridge. I would describe this band as an updated mixture of Echo and The Bunnymen crossed with New Order or Sonic Youth. Very Noisy and hypnotic, yet occasionally sparse and dancey.

Yes Giantess

-Boston dance rock

Treehorn
A sad singer songwriter moping in his own beer, but in the best possible way. A full band show. Treehorn and I recorded an EP in the spring of 2006.
